Description

Welcome to this 100% online, open and free course. This concise and intensive course covers what a future Rioja wines expert needs to know: their territory, grape varietals, the human element, the styles of wine that are created, the classifications of Rioja wines, regulations on viticulture and aspects to do with production, gastronomy and history. Course participants will learn about the flavour and characteristics of the wines and how some of them are developed over time. We will be talking about modern styles and more traditional approaches, as well as the recent trend to official recognition of the territory.

We will suggest various wines that illustrate the course contents and will bring you even closer to our unique interpretation of viticulture and oenology.

When you complete the course, you have a sound knowledge of Rioja and you will understand its position among the world's great wines.

Estimated duration: 15 hrs.

Assessment: At the end of each module there will be a set of review questions relating to the content. To progress to the next modules, you will need to answer 100% of the questions correctly and you will have a limited number of attempts.

At the end of the course you will take the final exam. This will consist of 30 questions, which you will have to answer within a time limit of 30 minutes. To be awarded the Rioja Wine Diploma, you must answer at least 75% of the questions correctly.

You have a maximum of 2 attempts to pass your exam, but if you fail, RWA will launch a new call every three months - with two other opportunities - of which you will be informed in advance so that you can take the exam again and obtain the certificate.

    The information I found in this study is extremely usefull for representing Rioja wines perfectly to consumers. All modules are structured very well and the key sentences are marked in bold. However it would be great if the statistics of sales, wineries and all the numbers in percentage would be updated on the regular bases. Big thanks to creators of this study programm. It is very helpfull for preparing to certification and teaching in Sommelier schools!

    Ace+ Unlike me, you’ll have to be Speedy Gonzales-like in the final exam & ready to select multiple options (not just one) to answer correctly. The end-of-section practice questions can be revisited as many times as you like but really aren’t that useful for the final exam. Clay-limestone soils are a 'thing' in Rioja Alavesa! Salud.

    I think it should be possible to review any of the units more than once, before being required to take the final exam; or else, make it very clear that one should take good notes from which to study. While the course is very interesting and comprehensive, a few of the quiz questions are quite unnecessarily highly specific (does it really matter if the DOC involves exactly 144 municipalities, rather than just >100?).

    This was a fun and informative course. The modules were a great, digestible size and the regular quizzes were very helpful. It's a great program, and I recommend it to anyone. I lived in Spain (but left before the changes and addition of varieties) and though I visited Rioja a number of times, I learned a lot from this course.

    A very good course. It helped me on basic winemaking topics (soil, grapes, climate etc.) and helped me in preparations for my WSET 3 rd level exam. One of the greatest tips was the website www.greatwinecapitals.com which I will use to plan my trip to the Rioja region. The exam was really difficult, I thought. Multiple answers to multiple choice questions were tricky.

    Very informative. I'd like to suggest that students should be able to go back to each question before submitting as it is quite difficult.

    Very interesting and worth studying. I would be very interested to know which questions I got wrong. I think it would help others to know too. Particularly when answering date related and percentage questions.

    Great course and format. Very informative but it gets real technical. Personally, have done quite a few wine trips down under. Now this has got me interested in a trip to one of the Rioja wine routes!!

    Wow. That final exam was not easy. Now that I passed it, I'd like to see all of the questions and the correct answers to learn which ones I missed. The whole course was a lot of fun, however, so thank you for giving me the chance to learn more about my favorite wines.
